Steve lives in Tacoma, WA where he spends his days (and sometimes his nights) making furniture and creating art.

He started to work with wood as a child in his grandfather’s woodshop. As time went on, working with wood would take a back seat to other creative pursuits such as photography, painting and collage. He produced many pieces and his work has shown in various galleries in Virginia, California and Mexico.

While spending time in Mexico he began experimenting with found object sculpture, often using old pieces of discarded wood and other detritus to create whimsical sculptures. Slowly, he found himself drawn back to the art of woodworking and eventually into a shop working full time making furniture and other custom pieces.

The birth of re-Furniture

While at the shop, he familiarized himself once again with the tools of the trade and began to learn new skills and techniques. At the same time he became very aware of the waste and the toxicity involved in the process of modern woodworking. Watching perfectly usable pieces of plywood and hardwoods go into the trash soon became unacceptable to Steve and so his scrap pile grew.

What to do with all this wood? He began sketching ideas onto a pad and in an instant his distinctive scrap plywood style was born. As his scrap pile grows he continues to venture into new territory, exploring new ways to use the wood he recovers.
